And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. - Matthew 4:3-4
When Jesus was tempted, Jesus did not use any supernatural powers to resist the devil. Jesus simply quoted the written Word of God to the devil. This is the footsteps of Jesus we have to follow. Jesus Christ is showing us how to overcome the attacks of our enemy. Here Satan is also quoted the word of God like Jesus Christ. But Satan twisted the meaning. Jesus responded Satan only with another verse from the Bible. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (Mat 4:6-7) In this whole incident you will see that quoting the written Word was the only defense Jesus used against the devil. Nothing else. In your life you are facing so many problems and trials, if you like to overcome Satan and live a victorious life; you must use the word of God as your weapons against Satan. God's Word in your mouth is your spiritual weapon. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Eph 6:17) As you are going to overcome Satan through the word of God, it is important to read the word of God and walk according to the word of God. Yet it is not enough to just read the Bible or meditate it. When Satan brings thoughts that are not in agreement with the word of God, you must speak the Word to the devil who is behind those thoughts. He will run away from you. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. (Mat 4:10-11)
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death - Revelation 12:11
